The Dark Knight comes with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to everything. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what the movie great - in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing performance and a compelling vision - is that it's normal fantasy element of the bypasses superhero genre and makes everything really frightening. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralyzed the city. He enters an alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon - and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player into the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), the crime boss has a solution - kill the Batman. To make matters is that Dent is now out of Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to slip their role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne.

In his last completed role before his tragic death, is fantastic Ledger as The Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the film: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes more colorful villains). Government co-writer Christopher Nolan (Memento ) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better successor, which stands out from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man by its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism - there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, there is a lane is too long, and it is much too intense for children. But for most movie fans - and not just superhero fans - The Dark Knight is a film for eternity. - David Horiuchi

On the Blu-ray Disc
The Dark Knight on Blu-ray is a great home theater showoff disc. The details and colors in both dark and bright scenes (the Gotham General scene is a great example of the latter) is enormous, and the punishment of Dolby TrueHD soundtrack makes the house rattle. (After giving us only Dolby 5.1 published in a number of big Blu-ray this fall, Warner came through with Dolby TrueHD in this case.) One of the most interesting elements The Dark Knight was how certain scenes were filmed in IMAX, and if you saw the movie in an IMAX theater the film aspect ratio would suddenly change from standard 2.40:1 to a thrilling 1.43:1 filled the screen six stories high. For the Blu-ray disc, director Christopher Nolan has created something this experience by shifting his film from 2.40:1 aspect ratio (through most of the film) to 1.78:1 in the IMAX scenes again. While the effect is not as dramatic as it was in theaters, it's still an eye-catching experience to be watching the film on a widescreen TV with black bars top and bottom, then seeing the 1.78:1 scenes the entire screen fills. The main bonus feature on Disc 1 is "Gotham Uncovered: The Creation of a Scene", which is 81 minutes behind-the-scenes footage about the IMAX scenes, the Bat suit, Gotham Central, and others. You can watch the movie and these featurettes when the icon appears, or you can just watch them from the main menu. A special feature is a welcome and, in addition to English, French, Spanish, and audio and subtitles, there is an audio option, which described the visually impaired to experience the film as well.

Disc 2 has two 45-minute documentaries on Bat-gadgets and on the psychology of Batman, both in high definition. They combine movie clips, talking heads, and comic book panels, but does not need the kind of things one to watch twice. Appealing are six eight-minute segments of Gotham Central, a faux-news program that gives some background to events in the film, as well as a variety of trailers, poster art, and much more. The BD-Live component on disc 1 is more interesting than on some earlier Blu-ray discs, which could be as simple as a question of content to catch up with the technology. There are three new picture-in-picture commentary by Jerry Robinson (creator of the Joker), DC Comics President Paul Levitz, and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt. - he's a Batman fan who cameos a few film and TV has made), plus you can add your own commentary and upload it for others to watch. There are also three new featurettes ("Sound of the Batpod," "Harvey Dent's Theme" and "Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard") and two motion comics ("Mad Love," with Harley Quinn, and "The Shadow of Ra Al Ghul "). No longer available is the digital copy of the film (compatible with iTunes and Windows Media, standard definition, download code expires 09/12/09). - David Horiuchi

We are witnessing the first meeting between R2-D2 and C-3PO, Jabba the Hutt looks younger and slimmer (but not young and slim) and Yoda is as crabby as ever. Natalie Portman, the majestic Queen Amidala sports hairdos that make Princess Leia look dowdy and to exercise an average laser We never bond with Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan's day is yet to come. Jar Jar Binks, a cross between a Muppet, a frog and a hippie is, many of the film, the lighter moments, while Sith Lord Darth Maul is a formidable force. Episode II, Attack of the Clones When The Phantom Menace was the setup, then Attack of the Clones is the plot forward payout and devoted Star Wars Fans are sure to be thrilled. Ten years after Episode I, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), now a senator, resists the creation of a Republic Army to combat an evil separatist. The brooding Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is angry with his stern Jedi mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), tormented by personal loss, and shows his new "dark side" to protect his new love, Amidala, from would-be assassin . Youth romance and solemn signs point to the events of the original Star Wars as Count Dooku (aka Darth Tyranus, played by Christopher Lee) forges an alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith, while lavish set pieces showcase George Lucas's supreme command of all-digital filmmaking. Episode III Revenge of the Sith Exit the most popular film epic in history, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith is an exciting, uneven, but ultimately satisfying journey. All this is in the first half of Episode III, which feels a lot like Episodes I and II. That means spectacular scenery, dazzling dogfights in space, a new fearsome villain (match can not be created by the CGI Grievous up to either Darth Maul or the original Darth Vader, though), lightsaber duels groan-worthy romantic dialogue, goofy humor (but at least it is to the droids instead of Jar-Jar Binks) leave, and hordes of faceless clone troopers fighting hordes of faceless battle droids.
But then all the changes.
After setting up characters and situations in the first two and a half movies, Episode III finally comes to life. The Sith Lord in hiding unleashes to take his long-simmering plot, the republic, and an integral part of this plan is to turn away from Anakin to the Jedi and toward the dark side of power. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past 10 years, you know that Anakin will transform into the dreaded Darth Vader and face an ultimate showdown with his mentor, but that does not matter. In fact a large part of the fun is knowing where things end up, but figuring out how they will get there. Should inspire the end of this prequel trilogy also fans to want to see the original movies again, but this time not out of frustration with the new one. Rather, because Episode III is a beginning and an end, it will trigger fond memories, as of close ties to the original thread in order few possibilities. But best of all, it seems, for the first time that we have is actually about what happened and who it happens to care

The last film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is uneven. While the visual effects, quantum leaps over the years were taken, which hunts for exciting speeders and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and carries the cuddly teddy known as the Ewoks.
